Do not get fooled! You cannot copy store bought, or rental DVD's and Blu-Ray Movies using this unit.
You can however download movies off the web using either the Dvix, or Xvid mode (but not ISO), and transfer the movie onto a flash drive and watch it on your DMR-BW850.
However, the DMR-BW850 will not allow you to watch movies on a flash drive when it is in record mode.
You also can download movies, or copy movies on your computer and burn them onto a DVD using ISO, or AVI, and watch the movie on the DMR-BW850. You cannot watch movies in MKV for some silly reason.
You cannot overlap recordings.
The different recording modes are confusing. The more space you use the less quality, is about the best I can describe it.
If you want to use a portable flash drive bigger than 32 GB, then you need to format the flash drive as FAT32. I have used upto 2 TB.
Although the menus take forever sometimes, this is common with all such units.
The menus are relatively simple, and they take your recording in time codes, not listings as some other units do.
It is so useful not to have multible connections, some HDMI Cords are upto $500 each. Imagine spending another $1500 just on cords for each unit.
To sum up the DMR-BW850 is just a good unit that could have used another year in the workshop.
